Volunteer This Holiday Season

Are you looking for a way to give back this holiday season?  Volunteering may be just what you are looking for. It is a great way to get involved in your community and unit, work together as a family, and spread some holiday cheer!  As Marine Corps families, we do not have the luxury of celebrating the holidays in the same location every year, so getting out and helping others creates lasting memories at each duty station.

If you’re new to volunteering you may be unsure of where to start. Consider volunteering for activities such as soup kitchens, angel trees, or delivering meals to needy families.  The organizations that provide these services are always looking for help, especially during the holidays.  There are also many opportunities for you to volunteer with your unit.  No matter how you contribute, your involvement is always appreciated and valued!

Still not sure if volunteering for you? Here are three reasons why you should consider giving back this holiday season.

  1. Volunteering is Great for the Mind, Body, and Soul:

Helping others increases your levels of happiness and appreciation. Volunteering can also get you out of the house, helping you to spend quality time with friends or loved ones while at the same time helping those in need. Volunteering also sets a great example for your children, as kids learn how to live selflessly through helping others.

  1. Connect with your Community and Unit:

Volunteering is the perfect bridge to your community and unit. As a Marine Corps family, you may have recently PCS’d and are hoping to meet people at your new installation.Volunteering in your community or within your unit is a great way to get started. If your Marine is deployed and you are looking to connect with other spouses or families, volunteering is a great way to make those connections!

  1. Expand your Horizons:

Are you thinking about a career change? A great way to test out a new career field is to volunteer. Your unit is always in need of volunteers to support many initiatives throughout the year. Volunteering is also a great way to enhance your resume, as many Marine Corps volunteering opportunities give you the chance to develop skills that are in demand in today’s job market.

Volunteering is an ideal way to spread joy this holiday season, while having a positive impact both inside and outside of your installation’s gates.  Volunteering can have a huge influence on your life and your community.
